European Blockchain Faces a Talent Exodus — But Not a Defeat
Barcelona, Spain — As Europe battles a 90% decline in blockchain job openings since 2022, optimism is brewing ahead of the 11th European Blockchain Convention (EBC11) set to take place in Barcelona on October 16–17, 2025.
The event will bring together global executives, policymakers, and innovators to challenge the perception of European stagnation — and highlight the continent’s pivotal role in building the next era of decentralized finance and digital infrastructure.
The Harsh Reality: Regulation, Energy, and Financing Struggles
Analysts point to rising energy costs, slow regulatory adaptation, and Europe’s heavy reliance on traditional bank lending as primary factors behind the exodus of blockchain talent to more agile markets like the U.S. and Asia.
Despite these hurdles, Europe continues to nurture leading disruptors such as Bitpanda (Austria) and London-based DeFi giant Avara (formerly Aave), proving that innovation within the continent remains alive — albeit under pressure.
Leaders Speak of Renewal, Not Decline
“There’s a popular narrative that Europe is falling behind in digital assets, but that doesn’t reflect reality,” said Victoria Gago, Co-Founder of EBC.“While the U.S. makes headlines with regulatory drama, Europe is quietly laying the groundwork for the future of finance — from MiCA’s clear framework to the digital euro initiative.”
Gago emphasized that EBC11 aims to highlight Europe’s progress — not just its challenges — through open discussions, technical sessions, and collaboration between the public and private sectors.
Signs of Momentum: Fintech Funding and the Digital Euro
Simultaneously, the European Central Bank (ECB) and EU member states are nearing consensus on the design and implementation of the much-anticipated digital euro, signaling a major leap forward in Europe’s digital finance agenda.
